Here at Family First Therapy, we understand the daily challenges of parents and families of children with Autism. Our team of highly trained Speech Therapists has over 19 years of experience working with children and families with Autism. Each child with Autism and their needs are unique; therefore, each treatment and intervention plan must be tailored to meet the specific needs of your child and family.
All interventions we provide focus on the core areas affected by autism, including: social skills, language, communication, play, and daily living skills.
We incorporate ideas from each of the following evidenced based therapy programs:
-
Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)
– This approach focuses on the principles of positive reinforcement and repetition. Research has shown that when a behavior is followed by a high value reward, the behavior is more likely to be repeated. By implementing ABA principles into the therapy program, we can increase positive behavior and decrease those that may cause harm or interfere with your child’s learning.
-
Verbal Behavior (VB)
– Many children with Autism have a difficult time communicating their needs. Verbal Behavior Therapy uses the theories and principles of ABA to help children learn language by understanding the power of communication. By teaching children why we use words, they are better able to connect words with their purpose and understand that words have a positive result. If a child is nonverbal, then the focus is on teaching the child to communicate via other means such as pointing, gesture, or communicating via pictures/drawings.
-
DIR Floortime
– This approach encourages parents and therapists to literally get on the child’s level on the floor and play. The theory behind Floortime is that by getting on the child’s level and engaging with the child in an activity that he/she enjoys, parents can better direct the child in simple tasks and activities that teach new behaviors, language, and social skills.
Our play based therapy sessions have a central focus on social skills training and communication.
By offering a family centered approach to each child’s treatment program, children are better able to apply the skills learned in therapy to other environments within the home, school, and their community.
